The types of insulators include needle insulators, suspension insulators, porcelain cross arm insulators, column insulators, string insulators, tension insulators, DC insulators, composite insulators, polymer insulators, glass insulators, etc.
Insulators are a special type of insulation control installed between different potential conductors or conductors and grounding components, capable of withstanding voltage and mechanical stress. Although there are significant differences in the structure and appearance of different types of insulators, they are all composed of two main parts: insulation components and connecting fittings. Insulators play an important role in electrical engineering, especially in overhead transmission lines, which can increase the creepage distance. They are usually made of glass or ceramics. There are various types and shapes of insulators, which can be classified into the following types based on their different uses, structures, materials, and other factors:
Needle insulators: mainly used on lines below 35kV, especially on straight towers and small angle towers.
Suspension insulator: usually installed on segmented poles, terminal poles or branch poles of high-voltage distribution lines, used as a tension or terminal insulator string.
Ceramic cross arm insulator: serves as both an insulator and a cross arm.
Column insulator: Its purpose is basically the same as needle insulator, but it has stronger anti pollution ability.
String insulator: composed of multiple ceramic rings, used for suspension and tension support in high-voltage transmission lines.
Tensile insulator: composed of one or more ceramic rods, used for crossing and vertical support in high-voltage transmission lines.
DC insulator: composed of multiple ceramic rings or fiberglass materials, used for support and isolation in DC transmission lines.
Composite insulator: composed of ceramic core rod and silicone rubber outer layer, it has excellent insulation ability and anti pollution flashover performance.
Polymer insulator: made of polymer materials such as plastic or rubber, used for support and isolation in low-voltage distribution systems.
Glass insulator: made of glass fiber material, suitable for power equipment in high temperature and high humidity environments.
Each type of insulator has its specific advantages and scope of application, and the selection of suitable insulator types and specifications should be based on different electrical equipment and environmental conditions.
